How to Maintain Clean Carpets Throughout the Year

Practical ways to protect carpets from dirt, stains and everyday wear, season by season, in Kenyan homes and offices.

Man vacuuming a carpet indoors

A good carpet makes a room warmer and quieter, but in Kenya it faces a tough life. Red soil, road dust, rainy-season mud and everyday spills all take their toll. With a simple routine, you can keep your carpet looking good for years.

Stop dirt at the door

Most of the dirt on your carpet comes in on shoes. Place a good mat outside and inside each entrance. If you can, ask family and visitors to take off their shoes. This one habit can reduce the amount of grit that gets into your carpet far more than any cleaning product.

Vacuum more often than you think

Grit acts like tiny blades in the fibres, and it wears them down each time someone walks across. Vacuum busy areas at least twice a week and the rest of the room weekly. Go slowly, because a vacuum needs time to lift dirt from deep within the pile. Do not forget the edges, where dust collects along the skirting.

Treat spills straight away

The faster you act, the better your chances.

  1. Scrape up any solids with a spoon.
  2. Blot with a clean, white, absorbent cloth.
  3. Work from the outside of the stain inwards.
  4. Dab with a little cold water.
  5. Blot dry.

Never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and roughens the fibres. Avoid hot water on protein stains such as milk or blood, because heat can set them.

A carpet care calendar for Kenya

January to March: the dry months

Dust is at its highest now. Vacuum more often, and keep windows closed during windy spells or on days when nearby construction is active.

March to May: the long rains

Mud is the main problem. Let mud dry completely, then vacuum it away before dealing with any mark. Trying to wipe wet mud only pushes it into the fibres.

June to August: the cool season

Carpets take longer to dry now, so choose a warm day for any cleaning. Keep rooms ventilated to avoid musty smells.

October to December: short rains and the holidays

This is the ideal time for a professional clean, before guests arrive and spills become more likely.

Rotate and protect

Move rugs and furniture every few months, so that the same areas are not always bearing the load. Use furniture cups under heavy items. Close curtains during the brightest hours in sunny rooms to reduce fading.

How often should you book professional cleaning?

  • Homes with light use: every 12 months
  • Family homes: every 6 to 12 months
  • Homes with pets: every 6 months
  • Offices: every 6 to 12 months, depending on traffic

Regular vacuuming removes loose dirt, but it does not remove all the oils and embedded soil. A professional clean does, and it can help a carpet to last longer.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using too much soap, as residue attracts more dirt
  • Over-wetting, which can lead to smells and damage the backing
  • Using bleach on stains
  • Walking on a damp carpet in outdoor shoes

Choosing the right vacuum settings

Set the vacuum to the right height for your carpet. If the setting is too low, it can damage the pile, and if it is too high, it will not pick up the grit. Empty the bag or the container often, as a full vacuum loses suction. Clean the brush roll, too, because hair and thread can wrap around it and reduce its effectiveness.

Caring for rugs

Loose rugs can be easier to manage than fitted carpet. Hang them outside and shake or gently beat them on a dry day, to remove the deep dust. Use a non-slip underlay to reduce wear and prevent falls. Turn your rugs every few months, so that sun and foot traffic affect them evenly. Hand-made and silk rugs need special care, so ask for advice before washing them.

Carpets in offices and shared spaces

Commercial carpets have to deal with far more traffic. Use long entrance mats, vacuum daily or several times a week, and set up a schedule for spot cleaning. Pay attention to areas near kitchens and water dispensers, where spills are common. Plan periodic deep cleaning for weekends or holidays, so that there is time for drying.

Frequently asked questions

Does professional cleaning make carpets get dirty faster?

Not when it is done properly. Carpets get dirty faster when soap residue is left behind, which is why rinsing and controlled products matter.

How do I get rid of a damp carpet smell?

Improve airflow, lift the carpet off damp floors if possible and find the source of any moisture. If the smell continues, the carpet may need professional cleaning, or the floor beneath may have a damp problem.

Are carpets a good idea in Nairobi?

Yes, as long as they are looked after. They add warmth in the cool season and reduce noise, particularly in apartments. Choose darker or patterned designs for high-traffic areas.
